On 29 th of June, during the boat survey, our team confirmed the presence of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) in the coastal zone of Montenegro and this time in Boka Bay where the max depth is 68m. Namely, in 2024, we received a video recorded in Budva near the coast at a depth between 80 – 100m, where about 10 individuals of striped dolphins were present, according to the report from the Instagram account Montenegro fishing.
Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) are resident inhabitants of the Adriatic Sea, for which, until now, was believed to prefer deep waters, over 200m depth, therefore this finding is very important because understanding movements and behaviour of the marine mammal species that inhabit our sea is of a great importance for monitoring the changes that our sea and marine species are facing.
In addition, this example showed that the implementation of the citizen science and collaboration between locals and scientists is the key in data collection of the species that are extremely important for the marine ecosystem, with the goal for a better future for all of us.
